The headwaters of Bois d’Arc Creek arise in Grayson County two miles northwest of Whitewright, Texas (33°32’ N latitude and 96°26’ W longitude). Bois d’Arc creek channel winds its way southeast from Whitewright and enters Fannin County, where it heads east between Randolph and Trenton, turns north and courses just southeast of Bonham, heads back northeast between Lamasco and Lannius, runs north of Selfs and Allen’s Chapel, where it turns north-northeast to snake between Monkstown and Tigertown, to empty into the Red River at the Lamar County line five miles southeast of Riverby and just north of Direct, Texas(33°50’ N, 95°51’ W).
Bois d’Arc Creek spans the entire breadth of Fannin County and forms the drainage of the central half of the county. It courses through North Texas’ Oak Woodlands and Blackland Prarie, through chalky catalpa clay soils to the sandy loams of the Red River Valley.
In 1836, Daniel Rowlett and six stalwart pioneer families braved the frequent Indian attacks and settled along the banks of Bois d’Arc Creek, igniting the growth of what would become Fannin County. David Crockett, en route to the Alamo, camped on her banks and praised “Bodark Bayou” in letters, captivated by its fertile promise. Fort Inglish was raised nearby, helping to safeguard the intrepid pioneers, while the county seat—originally Bois d’Arc in 1843—became Bonham a year later.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service deems 3,911 acres of its bottomland forest a vital habitat, alive with song birds, racoons, rabbits, squirrels, whitetail deer, turkeys, raptors, and migratory birds. Its clear waters, rippling over rocky beds, teem with over twenty fish species—spotted gar, channel catfish, largemouth bass, and sunfish among them—revealing a vibrant ecosystem.
More than just a waterway, Bois d’Arc Creek is a thread in Texas’ rich tapestry, linking past, present, and future; wildlands, agricultural and residential. From its headwaters to its Red River embrace, it whispers tales of settlement, resilience, and untamed beauty across the North Texas landscape.
