Bonham, the county seat and commercial center of Fannin County, is situated twelve miles south of the Red River, thirty-nine miles west of Paris, twenty-nine miles east of Sherman, and six miles north of Texas Best Propane’s World Headquarters outside of Randolph, Texas. The town that would become Bonham is one of Texas' oldest cities and was originally known as Bois d'Arc when it was established in 1836 by Bailey Inglish, who built nearby Forth Inglish as a protection from Indian attacks. Partially because of it's central location, Bois d'Arc became the county seat of Fannin County in 1843. It was renamed Bonham by the Texas legislature in 1844 in honor of James Butler Bonham - a fallen hero of the Alamo. Bonham was incorporated as a city on February 2, 1848. Bonham became an important trading center for settlers arriving to northeastern Texas, hailing mainly from Kentucky and Tennessee. During the War Between the States, Bonham was the site of General Henry McCulloch’s Confederate military headquarters for Northern Texas.
After The War, Bonham witnessed a new influx of settlers arriving from the Upper South. This growth was subsequently spurred by the arrival of the Denison, Bonham, and New Orleans branch of the Missouri, Kansas, and Texas railroad in 1887. The arrival of the railroad enhanced agricultural exports including cotton, row-crops, and lumber. The town continued to grow and soon had three newspapers, a sawmill, gristmills, cotton gins, and the largest cotton mill west of the Mississippi. Row crops were eventually replaced with beef cattle, dairy cattle, and small-grains.
During World War II, Jones Field in Bonham served as a training camp and aviation school for the U.S. Army Air Force. A prisoner of war camp for captured German soldiers was built nearby.
Various industries including The Southwest Pump Company, General Cable plant, a Coca-Cola bottling words, and various factories to produce blue jeans, mattresses, ice, etc. moved to Bonham during the first half of the twentieth century. Farming remains a local leading industry.
The population of Bonham has slowly grown since the turn of the last century and topped just over 10,000 inhabitants by the U.S. census of 2010. There is a daily paper, a regional airport, an industrial park, and Texoma Medical Center - Bonham, a twenty-five bed critical-access hospital.
Bonham is the home of Samuel Taliaferro "Sam" Rayburn, who represented Texas' 4th congressional district from 1913 to 1961. Mr. Rayburn grew up near Windom, Texas and worked as a schoolteacher before winning a seat in the Texas House of Representatives in 1906. He graduated from the University of Texas School of Law in 1908 and won the election to the United States House of Representatives in 1912. He served as the national Democratic Party leader and served as the 43rd Speaker of the House a record seventeen of those years. He was a protegé of John N. Garner and a mentor to Lyndon Johnson.
