A Little Bit About Collin County, Texas

Collin County occupies 851 square miles of North Texas’ Blackland Prarie region. Adjacent counties include Grayson County to the north, Fannin County to the northeast, Hunt County to the east, Rockwall County to the southeast, Dallas County to the south, and Denton county to the west.

Settlers began to move to the area that would become Collin County in the early 1840s, attracted by the fertile soils, and free land grants. There were approximately 150 inhabitants when Collin County was debarked from Fannin County in 1846. Collin County and the county seat, McKinney, were named for Collin McKinney, one of the original settlers in the region and a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

The population of Collin County grew slowly over the next 30 years and totaled approximately 10,000 when the railroads reached North Texas in the1870s. The original settlers of Collin County were primarily farmers who raised corn, cotton, wheat, and cattle. The arrival of the railroads gave these early Collin County farmers access to larger markets for their crops, which spurred growth. By 1920, the population of Collin County had reached nearly 50,000 citizens.

The people of Collin County kept pace with progress over the years and added innovations such as electricity, paved roads, a telephone exchange, and mechanized farming techniques. Because most of the inhabitants of Collin County were farmers at the time, the mechanization of agricultural techniques caused a decline in the Collin County population to about 41,000 in 1960.

Over the next two decades, the Collin County economy began to diversify and the population had grown to 144,000 by 1980. The Collin County population nearly doubled over next 10 years to 264,000 by 1990 and nearly doubled again to 491,000 by 2000. The population of Collin County stood at 791,000 in 2010 and is now estimated to be at just under 1 million people. The economy is fully diversified into management, retail and wholesale sales, administration, business / financial operations, education, computer, health care, construction, etc.

With its solid school systems, relatively low taxes, and hands-off regulatory environment, Collin County remains one of the fastest growing counties in the United States. This phenomenal growth has been fueled by families following jobs transferring from other states as well as from other parts of the state of Texas. Collin County is proving to be adept at luring out-of-state companies such as Toyota Motor Corp., FedEx, Jamba Juice as well as in-state corporations including Liberty Mutual, JPMorgan Chase, and the Dallas Cowboys.
