Sherman, the county seat, is located at the junction of Texas State Highway 82 and Texas State Highway 75, approximately sixty-five miles north of Dallas.

The first settlers of what would become Grayson County arrived via river boat and established the Red River Preston Bend Trading Post in 1836. The Texas legislature created Grayson County in 1846 by carving 979 square miles out of western Fannin County. It was named for Peter W. Grayson who served in the Texas Revolution and was attorney general for the Republic.
