Honey Grove, Texas (affectionately called "The Sweetest Town in Texas") is named after an apiary in a grove of timber discovered by the area's first explorers. Davy Crockett camped near Honey Grove in 1836 while on his way to join the Texian revolutionaries at San Antonio. Crockett sent letters back to Tennessee describing the subtle beauty of the region and told of the abundance of wild bees and honey-filled hollow trees that prompted the town's toothsome moniker. Friends told of how Crockett planned to settle down here, but he died a few weeks later in the cause of Texas liberty with the other heroes of the Alamo.
Samuel Erwin, Davy Crockett's good friend from Kentucky, was one of the area's first settlers. He arrived to the area in 1837 and began surveying land grants for other newly-arriving pioneers. He later platted the town site for B.S. Wilcott and became Honey Grove's first postmaster as well as one of Fannin County's initial Justices of the Peace. The population of Honey Grove increased to 300 over the next ten years and gradually grew from there. The Texas and Pacific Railroad reached Honey Grove in the mid-1880’s and brought with it the new market opportunities for area farmers. By 1890, Honey Grove had grown to a peak of 3,000 citizens, 100 businesses, two newspapers, two banks, two schools, and seven churches. The population gradually diminished from this high-water mark and was around 2,500 by the end of the Second World War. Honey Grove stabilized at approximately 1,800 and now numbers around 1,700 people.
Honey Grove is located on the gently rolling prairie of eastern Fannin County on US Hwy 82, Texas Hwy 56, Texas Hwy 34, and FM 100, fifteen miles east of Bonham, 22 miles west of Paris, 12 miles north of Ladonia, and 18 miles south of Telephone, Texas. The average high temperature is just over 75° and annual rainfall is right at 44".
