A Little Bit About Lake Texoma

Lake Texoma has a surface area of 93,000 ares, a conservation water volume of over 2.5 million acre⋅ft, and a flood-control volume of over 5.1million acre⋅ft. It draws most of its water from the Red River to the west and the Washita River to the north. The lake drains east into the Red river through Denison Dam. Normal pool level is 615-619 feet above sea level, depending upon the time of the year. The spillway level is 640 feet, which has been crested five times since completion in 1944. The top of the dam is 670 feet above sea level.

The lake was created to help with downriver flood control, to generate hydroelectric power, to supply fresh water to surrounding counties in Texas and Oklahoma, as well as recreational use. It is home to over 70 species of fish.

Congressman Sam Rayburn backed the creation of Lake Texoma and helped pass the Flood Control Act in 1938 that authorized the confinement of the Red River at Baer’s Ferry by creating the Denison Dam. Work on the dam was begun in August of 1939 and completed in February of 1944. At the time of completion, Denison Dam was the largest earth-filled dam in the United States. The hydroelectric turbines were added later and are an important supply of renewable electricity for the surrounding area.

Due to its proximity to the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex as well as to its considerable size, Lake Texoma is an extremely popular recreational destination. The lake itself has become a major destination for those interested in power boating, sailing, personal watercraft, water skiing, wake-boarding, and windsurfing. The surrounding floodplains are irresistible to those interested in camping, hiking, hunting, 4-wheeling, bicycling, horseback riding, golfing, and The Texoma region has much to offer including wildlife refuges, state parks, marinas, resorts, campgrounds, and golf courses. Two of the world’s largest casinos are located just upstream and downstream of the lake.
